لقاء خاص مع د.مارك ثومبسون | A Biography of Dr. Mark C. Thompson

ضيف الحلقة هو الدكتور مارك ثومبسون، الباحث الرئيس بمركز الملك فيصل للبحوث والدراسات الإسلامية، ورئيس وحدة الدراسات الاجتماعية-الاقتصادية بالمركز. عمل الدكتور مارك كأستاذ مساعد لدراسات الشرق الأوسط بجامعة الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن منذ ٢٠١٢م حتى ٢٠١٩م

له عدة أبحاث وتقارير عن الحياة الاجتماعية في المملكة. مثل “تداعيات أزمة كورونا على التعليم في السعودية: هموم الطلاب” وتقرير ” كيف ينظر الشباب السعوديون لمهارات الوظائف المستقبلية؟”. في عام 2019، نشر أحدث كتاب له بعنوان “أن تكون شابًا سعوديًاً: الهوية والسياسة في المملكة المعولمة”

في لقاءنا تحدثنا معه عن بداياته. قبل أروقة الجامعات ومراكز الأبحاث. وجدنا قصة الدكتور مارك ملهمة ومختلفة عن المتوقع. فقد ولد في المملكة المتحدة، ولطبيعة عمل والده، عاش طفولته في الولايات المتحدة، ثم قضى عدة سنوات في إيطاليا. كل ذلك قبل دخوله الجامعة. لقد عاش في ثلاث قارات مختلفة منذ صغره، ويقول أنه أحب السفر ولم يجد في كثرة تنقله بين البلدان صعوبة في تكوين الصداقات

لم تكن دراسة البكالوريوس في الجامعة من أفضل تجاربه، فقد أتمها تلبية لرغبات والديه. وبعد تخرجه قرر أن يعمل على السفن السياحية (كروز). كانت هذه الوظيفة من أجمل تجارب حياته كما يقول. فقد طاف حول العالم وزار أماكن لم يحلم أحد بزيارتها. عمل حتى الثلاثين من عمره، ثم قرر أن يبدأ تجربة جديدة. قرر أن يتجه للتدريس

ليبدأ مسيرة التدريس درس الماجستير في علم اللغويات، وبدأ بتدريس الإنجليزية في عدة دول حول العالم، مثل كوريا الجنوبية، مملكة تايلند، تركيا، اليمن، ليبيا، وطبعًا المملكة العربية السعودية. أحب الدكتور مارك المملكة كثيرًا، في المملكة عمل مع شركة الخطوط السعودية، وبسبب ذلك زار أغلب مناطق المملكة من شرقها إلى غربها ومن شمالها إلى جنوبها. وبسبب الظروف السياسية والاجتماعية في تلك الفترة. قرر أن يدرس الماجستير مرة أخرى في دراسات الشرق الأوسط

كان الدكتور مارك يقارب الأربعين من عمره، ومع ذلك وجد نفسه مؤهلًاً لدرجة الدكتوراه التي أكمل بحثها الميداني وخصص رسالتها عن المملكة العربية السعودية. هذا درس مهم، ليس هناك عمر يتوقف عنده التعلم! قد يرى البعض أن الدكتور مارك بدأ متأخرًا، ولكنه لا يرى الأمر كذلك

The guest speaker is Dr. Mark Thompson, Senior Researcher at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, and Head of the Socio-Economic Studies Unit.Dr. Mark worked as Assistant Professor of Middle East Studies at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) from 2012 until 2019.

He has several researches and reports on social life in the Kingdom. Such as “Repercussions of the Corona crisis on education in Saudi Arabia: Students’ concerns” And the report, “How do young Saudis view future job skills?” In 2019, he published his most recent book, Being a Young Saudi: Identity and Politics in a Globalized Kingdom.

In our interview, we talked with Dr. Mark about his beginnings. We found Dr. Mark’s story to be inspiring and different than expected. He was born in the United Kingdom, and due to the nature of his father’s work, he lived his childhood in the United States, and then spent several years in Italy. He has lived on three different continents from a young age, and says that he loved to travel and did not find it difficult to make friends with his frequent travels between countries.

His undergraduate studies at university was not his best experience, as he completed it in response to his parents’ desires. After graduating, he decided to work on cruise ships. This job was one of the best experiences of his life, he says. He has roamed the world and visited places no one dreamed of. He worked until the age of thirty, then decided to start a new experiment. He decided to turn to teaching.

To start the teaching career, he studied a Master’s degree in Linguistics  at University of Wales, and began to teach English in several countries around the world, such as South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, Yemen, Libya, and of course the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr. Mark loved the Kingdom very much, in the Kingdom he worked with the Saudi Airlines Company, and because of that, he visited most of the Kingdom’s regions from east to west and from north to south. Because of the political and social conditions in that period. He decided to study a second Master’s degree in Middle Eastern studies at University of Exeter.

Dr. Mark was nearly forty years old, and yet he found himself qualified for a PhD. To finish his PhD, he completed his field research and dedicated his thesis on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is an important lesson, there is no age at which learning stops! Some might think Dr. Mark started late, but he doesn’t.
