What is bodily autonomy anyway? 

Bodily autonomy is the freedom and right to choose what happens to your body, or the consent of the owner of the body before anything is done to their body.

How can we apply bodily autonomy in birth? This IS a birth after all! There are no choices, the doctor has the final say.

Wrong. Bodily autonomy during birth is creating a safe space and relationship between the birthing woman and her healthcare provider, which is based on cooperation and understanding and not a hierarchy.

The healthcare team sees the woman as a focal point in any decision making process surrounding her body.

Today’s episode I have Dr. Kareem Zaki, OBGYN, dear friend and colleague whom I work with to care for and support labouring women.

We discuss the importance of bodily autonomy, but also the undeniable importance of creating a safe relationship between the medical team and the birthing woman, in order to ensure a positive experience for the mother regardless of the method of birth.
